Coronary Intervention

Coronary artery disease is a condition involving narrowed or blocked blood heart vessels. Depending on the severity and location of your blockages, our specialists will advise on the appropriate treatment option for you.

In general, mild narrowing can be treated with medication. Severe narrowing of the arteries may require intervention with ballooning (angioplasty), stent implantation or surgical bypass operation.

Coronary Angiography

What is it

This commonly performed and minimally invasive procedure involves inserting a narrow tube called a catheter through an artery in your wrist or groin. By using X-ray and a special dye injected through the catheter, we can see your coronary arteries and check for any blockages that may affect the blood flow to your heart.

Your doctor may recommend it for

Diagnosing coronary artery disease and determining the most suitable treatment.

Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI)

What is it
We will inflate a tiny balloon inside the narrowed artery to widen it. Most of the time, a stent is also implanted to keep the artery open.
Your doctor may recommend it for
Widening significantly narrowed blood vessels in the heart.

Complex Coronary Intervention

What is it

Complex coronary intervention are advanced techniques that require specialised equipment and greater technical skills. We perform the following based on each patient’s unique condition.

  • Coronary orbital atherectomy: Gently “sands” down calcium plaque in the arteries to restore flexibility to the arterial walls, making them more amenable to ballooning and stent implantation.
  • Intravascular lithotripsy (IVL): Uses sonic waves delivered via a catheter to break up calcium buildup in the coronary arteries, making them more amenable to ballooning and stent implantation.
  • Rotational atherectomy: Removes hard, calcified plaque buildup using a tiny diamond-tipped drill.
  • “Protected” PCI – The Impella heart pump is implanted via a small tube inserted in an artery in the groin. Under X-ray guidance, it is delivered into the heart. When turned on, it pulls blood out from the ventricle and pushes it into the aorta, delivering blood to the rest of the body. This helps maintain blood flow to the body during high-risk coronary intervention procedures. This pump is removed at the end of the procedure.

Your doctor may recommend it for

Treating blockages that are difficult to access, such as blockages that are heavily calcified, completely blocked, having steep bends, or if the blockage is located near the origin of the main arteries. The Impella heart pump provides support for patients with weak heart function and complex blockages undergoing PCI.

Coronary Artery Bypass Graft Surgery

What is it

Major surgery that creates a new path for blood to flow freely to the heart. A healthy blood vessel from another part of the body attached to the heart, bypassing blocked or narrowed sections of the artery.

Your doctor may recommend it for

Treating blockages when less invasive procedures like angioplasty is not suitable for you.
