Carotid and Peripheral Artery Intervention

Just like the arteries in your heart, the ones in other parts of your body can also get narrow. This can cause pain when you walk or run. The traditional treatment is surgery, but for patients with other medical issues, there can be a higher risk. Luckily, at The Heart and Vascular Centre, we offer minimally invasive alternatives to surgery.

Carotid Angioplasty and Stenting

What is it

Carotid angioplasty and stenting is a procedure used to open up a narrow carotid artery in the neck that supplies blood to the brain. This is done by inflating a small balloon and placing a stent, which is like a tiny metal tube, in the artery to keep it open. This procedure is typically done after someone has already had a stroke caused by the narrowed artery. It’s a less invasive option than surgery to remove the plaque that’s causing the narrowing, especially for patients who may be at higher risk for surgery or who choose not to have surgery.

Peripheral Artery Intervention

What is it

Peripheral artery angioplasty is a technique where doctors use balloons and stents to open up narrow arteries that supply blood to different parts of your body. This includes the arteries in your upper limb, kidneys, and lower limbs. The balloons and stents help widen the narrow area, and it’s a minimally invasive procedure, which means it’s not very invasive and doesn’t require a big surgery.
