What is Artificial heart pump (left ventricular assist device/ LVAD)?
A left ventricular assist device (LVAD) is an artificial heart pump that is surgically implanted in patients with advanced heart failure in whom medication is no longer sufficient. The LVAD helps to improve debilitating heart failure symptoms such as recurrent breathlessness, poor effort tolerance and fluid overload in patients with very weak heart function. It takes over the function of the weakened left ventricle and pumps blood out of the heart so that important nutrients and oxygen can be delivered to the rest of the body. The LVAD may be implanted while patients await a heart transplant (Bridge-To-Transplant) or as a long-term support (Destination Therapy). The latest pump used in our patients is the Heartmate 3 LVAD pump.
