Heart valve problems can cause a lack of forward blood flow or excessive leakage backwards, leading to heart enlargement or failure. Open-heart surgery is the traditional treatment, but some patients with additional medical conditions may be at an increased risk for surgery. At The Heart & Vascular Centre, we are able to perform minimally invasive interventions as alternatives treatment in suitable patients.
What is it
A TAVI is usually done through a small incision in the groin and is a good option for people who cannot undergo open-heart surgery. Studies show that it is as good as or even better than open-heart surgery for most patients.
Your doctor may recommend it for
Replacing a narrowed heart valve (Aortic Stenosis) without open surgery
What is it
Patients with severe tricuspid valve regurgitation often experience shortness of breath, leg swelling, abdominal bloating, and loss of appetite. This new therapy implants two specially designed self-expanding valves, via a leg vein, close to the chambers in the right side of the heart. These valves expand in place to eliminate the abnormal backflow of blood into the liver, kidney, head, and neck veins.
Your doctor may recommend it for
Treating heart failure caused by a leaky tricuspid valve (tricuspid regurgitation), if you’re a high-risk patient with no other suitable treatment options.
What is it
In this procedure, we use a balloon to widen a narrowed mitral valve in the heart. It is performed through a small incision in the groin.
Your doctor may recommend it for
Severe mitral valve narrowing (mitral stenosis)
What is it
A less risky option for patients compared to open-heart surgery, this procedure fixes leakage around the artificial valve after prior heart valve surgery.
Your doctor may recommend it for
If you’re experiencing leakages around the edges of your implanted heart valves.
What is it
A small umbrella-shaped device is placed inside the heart to prevent blood clots from forming and reduce the need for blood thinners. This minimally invasive treatment can be an alternative to taking blood thinners for life for patients at high risk for bleeding.
Your doctor may recommend it for
Reducing blood clots if you suffer from atrial fibrillation or chaotic/ irregular heart rhythm.
What is it
A PFO is a small hole in the heart that can increase the risk of stroke in young patients when no other causes are found. By closing the PFO with a device, the recurrence of stroke in these patients can be reduced.
Your doctor may recommend it for
Closing a PFO if you have had a stroke and no other causes can be found.
What is it
MitraClip uses a clip delivered from the groin to repair severe leakage of the mitral valve.
Your doctor may recommend it for
Alternative for patients at high risk for open-heart surgery for mitral regurgitation.
